You’re ready to start a yoga practice but don’t know where to start. Or, you’ve been practicing for a while and have hit a plateau. You may have a group of friends or family gathering and private group session would be the perfect activity to do together. Regardless of why you’re here, I’d like to share with you what to expect when we meet.
To Start
I am not a psychotherapist, medical practitioner, or physical therapist. Our time together will be strictly to work with yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and some other practices to supplement or kick-start a healthy lifestyle. You should always clear your health and physical ability to practice yoga with your medical practitioner before beginning any fitness program.
How We Begin
If you haven’t already, you will complete an intake form that will give me a good idea of where you are at currently and your goals for working together. The answers to these intake questions will guide our first session and begin our dialogue to set up our time together to work on your goals.
We will discuss
- your medical and health history including injuries, surgeries, etc.
- any physical ailments you are working with
- what your current comfort level is with yoga
- what other exercise, movement, or mindfulness practices you have or are practicing
- what you do for a living and for fun
- what your sleep is like
- what you hope to achieve while working together
- stress reduction
- build strength
- learn body awareness
- more focus, etc
This will take about 15-20 minutes of our first session.
What's Next
Now that we are both clear on the goals for your session, we will begin with a short centering followed by some small warm up movements to get the limbs going.
Once we’re moving, depending on the goals for the session, we’ll start moving more or move to a mindfulness practice. The postures we works with will be introduced specifically to meet your foals for the session.
If you’re brand new to yoga, you will be introduced to common yoga postures including their names and how to set your body up in them.
Throughout our time together we will check in to make sure we are still on track, if the goals for the session need to be adjusted, and/or if we need to go in a different direction.
It is important to remember this is your practice, so if at anytime something doesn’t feel right, you have the right and duty to speak up about it so I know to adjust accordingly. I’m here to support you, not do my own thing.
To Close
We’ll end our time together with a brief discussion of successes and if we worked toward the goal(s) set at the beginning of the session. After a brief discussion, our time will close with a short centering.
I Can't Wait to Work With You!
I’m excited you’re here and to work with you as you take your physical and mental health into your own hands. I’m here to empower you to be the best possible version of you and to support you on your yoga journey!
